Fix Pull String Light Switch

Remove the light fixture housing from the fan.

Fix pull string light switch.

Pull chain light fixtures are handy for basements and storage areas until they quit working. A 6 amp light pull switch is used to control lighting and a 45a shower. Locate the wire connections from the pull chain switch to the unit. Cover the exposed wires with a twist connector then do the same process with the remaining one or two wires.

Tie a small knot on the end of the string and slip it into the tiny slot on the connector. Finally bolt in the new fan pull switch and reassemble the fan. There should be a little device that connects the string to the tiny chain that disappeared into the lamp. With 6 amp pull cord switch for lights there are 2 3 wires.

The small switch where the pull chain attaches should now be visible. Firmly tighten the screws so the copper wire compresses slightly. In the box holding the light fixture attach the black hot wire from the power source to the white neutral wire of the switch loop the one tagged with black electrical tape with a. To attach a new string you need to remove the lamp from the ceiling or wall and turn off power.

Carefully reattach the wires from the switch to the light remembering to pair black to black and ground to ground. Replace the old switch with a new pull chain switch then place the end cap back onto the light fixture. The chain is inside the lamp. Screw the new fixture to the box snugly but don t over tighten it or the porcelain might crack.

To fix and replace a bad on off light switch inside the ceiling fan. In older homes they might be the same colour or in newer homes you will find black or brown or even blue. Then unscrew the base unit which is mounted to the ceiling and remove the old unit. They are commonly used as bathroom light switches and used in environments susceptible to water to keep the user as far away from the circuit as possible hence the string pull.

Then reattach the same wire from your replacement pull switch which may require stripping the last 1 inch at the end of the wire. Use a small flathead screwdriver to undo tightening screws and pull the wires out. Disconnect these wires and pull out the switch.
